What sets Absolute Math Tutoring apart from other tutoring services?
Other tutoring services tutor in all subject matter. Absolute Math Tutoring focuses solely on mathematics. That’s the subject we know and we stick to it. By doing so, we can more clearly study and teach the unique processes of learning mathematics, which differs greatly from other subject matter such as reading and writing. We teach these processes and techniques through our very own specific method of tutoring.
Why should I use Absolute Math Tutoring rather than just hire a college student myself?
Absolute Math Tutoring provides accountability, flexibility, and experience over hiring independent college students. Most math tutors, especially independent college students, simply come to your home and watch the student do homework. We don’t do that; it’s a waste of time and money. Rather, we use a specific method of tutoring where we focus on what the student doesn’t know.
What is Absolute Math Tutoring’s special tutoring method previously mentioned?
Well, most tutors, especially independent college students, simply come to your home and watch your son or daughter do his or her homework. We don’t do that; it’s a waste of your time and money. Rather, we focus on what the student doesn’t know. To do this we ask that the student have their homework done before the tutor arrives. Now we realize that the student may not be able to do all their homework, or maybe none at all, after all, that’s why you’re hiring a tutor. But, by attempting to do their homework, getting the work done that they know how to do and struggling with the work that they don’t know how to do, the student will cherish the help of the tutor more when they arrive at the solution together. This helps in the memorization process because the student will understand the complicated parts of problems that require deeper understanding. If the tutor simply tells the student how to do the whole assignment, the student will never know how complicated the material is until the test, and that’s too late. Now, the above is what we usually focus on for about the first 40 to 45 minutes of a session, getting the student caught up with all the class material and also making sure they understand that evenings homework. The last 15 to 20 minutes of the session are spent skipping ahead a section or two beyond the class. This will help the student because he or she will be able to get more out of the lectures. The student will see familiar material in the classroom, gain confidence, and be able to participate in lectures because they recognize the material.
Do I have to sign a contract?
No. Absolute Math Tutoring does not force clients to sign any contracts or require any minimum amount of sessions.
What are your rates?
$40 dollars per hour. No contracts, no up front fees, and no minimum amount of sessions.
How often should I schedule tutoring sessions?
This depends on the current status of the student. Unfortunately, most people wait until there’s a problem before bringing in a tutor. Initially, we may need to schedule multiple weekly sessions until we get the student caught up. Once we get them caught up, we’ve found that meeting consistently at least once weekly is sufficient to keep the students in pace with the class material.
How long is each session?
The minimum session should be one hour for best results. The maximum that students can still retain material under normal circumstances is about one and one half hours. It is recommended to have one hour sessions under normal circumstances. Before midterms and finals, extra sessions and extended times are usually scheduled.
What if there is not a good personality match with the tutor?
We realize that sometimes there is a personality difference between students and tutors. This is completely understandable as a student needs to have a good personal connection with their tutor in order to facilitate a better learning environment. Fortunately, because we do have many tutors in each area, we are able to try multiple tutors until we do get that personality match so necessary for the learning process.
